Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer.  The real end follows about two weeks later, but for some reason people feel they can’t continue to wear shorts, swim, or eat ice cream after that day.  I am not of this belief system.  I eat ice cream any day of the year.  I love Christmas ice cream!  Anyway, regardless of my ignorance of the rules we decided to spend Labor Day showing some out of towner friendsround the neighborhood – stopping for meals, drinks, and snacks.  We started with brunch at Bar Tabac followed by a beer at the Gowanus Yacht Club, and ultimately ending up at Sweet Melissa Cremerie for something sweet.

Sweet Melissa Patisserie opened in 1998 with two locations – one on Court Street in Cobble Hill.  A second location opened in 2006  in Park Slope.  They offer a selection of individually hand crafted tarts, cookies, cakes, seasonal pies, and desserts – baked fresh daily.  Their use of the highest quality ingredients and attention to detail has made Sweet Melissa a neighborhood go to for the past 11 years.  Personally I like the hazelnut truffles.  Deadly.  In a good way.

The new Sweet Melissa Cremerie opened earlier this year (Or late last year) in the space adjacent to the Patisserie offering ice cream concoctions including sundaes, hot Belgian waffles, and beverages.  When it comes to desserts I am quite picky.  I don’t eat chocolate cake unless it’s the flourless chocolate cake from Robin Des Bois.  That’s not to say I don’t love chocolate though.  And ice cream…oh, baby.  I also like the mix of salty and sweet in desserts – chocolate covered pretzels are a major weakness.  So it was an obvious choice for me to order the butterscotch banana sundae with salted almonds.

We were seated in the main dining area.  The menu offers treats from both sides of the shop plus savory entrees.  Danyell, Kristina, and I all got ice cream sundaes.  Brian ordered strawberry pie  a la mode.  Everything looked amazing.  My sundae had the perfect mix of salt and sweet.  The base is a vanilla cream covered with homemade butterscotch sauce, fresh ripe bananas, whipped cream, salted almonds, and a special surprise cookie.  So much for my diet.  I devoured this thing.  There wasn’t a morsel left on the table.

Did (owner) Melissa Murphy make the right move opening the cremerie?  Absolutely!  If you like ice cream, you’ll LOVE Sweet Melissa Cremerie!  HIGHLY recommended!
