The Flying Cow Has Wings
“Are you friends of the owner?” My friend and I looked at each other. The bartender asked again, “Do you know Claudio?” We were puzzled. Last try, “Do you have a reservation?”
We had wandered into the private soft opening of The Flying Cow, an Argentine-inspired restaurant on the corner of Hope Street in Williamsburg, not realizing the Grand Opening in not until Wed-4/22.
Despite the mistake, we were invited to sit at the bar and enjoy their $20 fixed price menu. The decor is simple…one might call it cozy upscale. Think fresh flowers, mahogany window frames, dimly lit overhead globes, and iron chandeliers.
The wine was good and the appetizers were simple, if a little bland. The Scallops with Braised Seaweed was a more interesting choice than the Beets and Watercress with Miso Dressing, but neither one was what I would call delicious…
What was delicious was the Mediterranean Straight Bass; tender and filling, perfectly grilled and just a smack of lemon and butter. The fish was further complimented by roasted red peppers (yo, Chef Claudio, don’t be shy with the peppers!).
The Filet Mignon was also outstanding, even if the appearance was a little diminished by a side of sadly wilted fries. The aptly named Flying Cow has its beef flown in from Montana; hence, the delicious steaks.
For dessert, the Crema Catalana is the way to go. It’s the predecessor to Creme Brulee, made even more scrumptious by its subtle citrus flavors. It was so good, I was tempted to swallow the spoon…The second dessert was a Chocolate Fontaine with Raspberry Puree; a tiny tower of layered chocolate, which also commanded my respect.
I hope The Flying Cow is meant to stay for a while because there is potential there, but I’ll have to test out their slightly expanded menu on opening night. If they keep up the amicable service, keep the prices low and make improvements to their overly simple appetizers, they’ll have no problems keeping the house filled. Worst-case scenario, they’ll become a diner’s second choice when pricey Walter Foods is booked solid.
