A Walk and a Bagel

Brooklyn Heights, Cafes No Comments , Post by: Sam Jacobs

cafe-plymouthLast Saturday morning, Kristina and I decided to get up and out early, and start our weekend off right with a long, healthy walk.

I put on shorts and a sweatshirt and my gym sneakers, grabbed my wallet in case we should stop for coffee (smart idea #1), and left my phone and camera on the table (dumb idea #1).

We made our way up Clinton Street, and over west to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, stopped to take in the view of Manhattan, and moved on back around towards Henry.  We took our time, and about an hour into our journey we started to feel hungry.

For those of us who usually don’t venture too far across Atlantic Ave, we were now in fairly uncharted territory.  It was nice to discover that Henry Street in the fruit section (by Pineapple and Orange Streets) houses a number of small restaurants and cafes.

Kristina wasn’t too keen on a trendy sit-down meal, nor did I feel any need to stop moving for very long, so we decided to stop into a simple looking deli called The Plymouth Cafe.  It looks like almost any other simple deli.  A big metal and glass counter, four or five small tables, a window counter with stools, lots of coffee, and plenty of choices for breakfast.  We were quite hungry at this point, and both decided on eggs, American cheese, and turkey bacon on a toasted everything bagel.  The coffee, which is available in numerous flavors is self serve – which also means free refills.  I got a large hazel nut, Kristina got French vanilla.  We paid (about $13), and sat at the window to read a couple of the local free news papers.

The sandwiches were ready in a matter of minutes.  Each was piping hot, and gooey with cheese.  One bite was all it took to convince me that I’d just found my new favorite weekend breakfast spot.  The eggs were perfectly cooked – not too runny or too crisp.  The turkey bacon perfectly salty.  And the bagel, oh the bagel.  I don’t eat a lot of bagels these days, but they are truly one of my most favorite foods, and one of the reasons I may never leave the tri-state area.  To me, a toasted everything bagel is the perfect kind – crispy, hot, and perfect.

I finished my sandwich considerably faster than Kristina finished hers.  I refilled my coffee.  I stared at her hoping she wouldn’t be able to finish hers.  She did…I was heartbroken.  However, she agreed that this was one of the best egg sandwiches she’d ever eaten.

This Friday I’m taking a road trip to my old college in Oneonta, NY.  The bagels are lousy in that town, but they do Italian food very well.  I have to pass Brooklyn Heights on my way to the Deegan.  Perhaps I will indulge in some more egg sandwich goodness for the ride.  And perhaps I will remember my camera this time.
