A Beer and Buffalo Wings Bailout
Folks, we’re in a recession. And even if you haven’t been downsized, outsourced, furloughed or Ponzi-schemed, odds are you’re feeling the pinch. However, hope has arrived … in the form of cheap beer and buffalo wings.
My fellow Brooklynites, I don’t live on Wall Street or Main Street. But I do live near Court Street, where at the eastern edge of Brooklyn Heights lies the ultimate bailout: Monday nights at O’Keefe’s Bar & Grill.
The placard outside lured me in: 40 cent wings and $3 Sam Adams and Sam seasonal drafts. And this isn’t just a happy hour deal, folks. No, these prices are valid until close each and every Monday. So, for 10 bucks, you can have 10 wings and two quality drafts. (And you thought those AIG bonus babies had all the fun. Ha! Who’s getting the last laugh now?)
I bellied up at the bar, where four massive HD-TV’s (and a very cute bartender) were staring back at me. The crowd was an eclectic mix of blue-collar, business suits and Brooklyn law students. My Mets were on the TV in front of me and Bloc Party was playing in the background. I had yet to order and I was already in heaven.
The wings come in six flavors: Mild, Medium, Hot, Teriyaki, BBQ and Honey Garlic. Orders are taken in multiples of 10 and come with bleu cheese, celery and carrot sticks. I opted for 10 BBQ. Less than 10 minutes had passed when my wings arrived in all their glory: plump, lightly-battered and doused in sauce. The BBQ sauce was vinegar based and little too heavy on the vinegar for my liking (I prefer a sweeter barbeque sauce). However, the wings didn’t skimp on size or sauce. And at $4 for 10 wings, could I really complain?
There is a $15 minimum for all credit card charges, so make sure to bring cash; at these prices, you’ll have your work cut out for you to reach that amount.
